Old vines in sandy soils

On the eastern edge of Contra Costa County, where suburbs give way to orchards and the Delta, Brentwood and Oakley are known for farm stands, U-pick fruit in season and a handful of small wineries.

The area's deep, sandy soils have long hosted old, head-trained vineyards of Zinfandel, Carignane and Mourvèdre. Many of these heritage grapes are sought after by winemakers elsewhere in California, while local producers pour them close to home.
