Slow roads along the river

Just south of Sacramento, levee roads wind past pear orchards, sloughs and old river towns in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. This is Clarksburg wine country: quiet, agricultural and refreshingly unhurried, where many wineries are family-run and the person pouring may well have farmed the grapes.

Cool breezes drawn in from San Francisco Bay temper warm afternoons, a pattern that suits crisp whites and structured reds alike. Clarksburg is especially proud of its Chenin Blanc and Petite Sirah, and the historic Old Sugar Mill gathers several tasting rooms under one roof for an easy afternoon of exploring.
