A Gold Rush town made for strolling

Murphys is one of Gold Country's most charming towns, with a tree-lined main street of historic buildings, many of them now home to tasting rooms. It is easy to spend an afternoon wandering from one to the next.

Calaveras County's foothill vineyards produce Zinfandel, Rhône and Italian varieties, among others. Nearby, Calaveras Big Trees State Park protects groves of giant sequoias, and the area's caverns make an intriguing side trip.
