West of Buellton, the Santa Ynez River runs between hills that open toward the Pacific. Because Santa Barbara County's mountains run east–west, ocean fog and wind flow straight inland, creating one of California's coolest wine regions.
The Sta. Rita Hills appellation is celebrated for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In Lompoc, a cluster of small tasting rooms in an industrial park, affectionately called the Wine Ghetto, makes it easy to taste many producers in one stop.
