Wine country (Napa & Sonoma)

Peak
September–October: harvest energy and the busiest weeks of the year. Book tastings and rooms early.
Sweet spot
November, and March–May. Fewer crowds than summer and harvest, green hills in spring, autumn color in November.
Quiet
December–February: fewest crowds and the lowest federal lodging benchmark ($194 vs $266 a night in Napa), but it's the rainiest, coolest stretch (highs upper-50s to low-60s °F).
Watch out
Harvest timing moves with the weather — the 2026 crush started on July 21, early. Sonoma's coast can be foggy and cool when inland valleys are hot; pack layers.

Ski

Peak
Christmas–New Year, Martin Luther King weekend and Presidents' Day weekend — these are the pass blackout/peak dates (e.g. Epic Local: Nov 27–28, Dec 26–31, Jan 16, Feb 13–14).
Sweet spot
April at resorts still open: at Breckenridge base depth peaks in March–April (69–72 inches), while the federal lodging benchmark for Vail falls from $417 (Dec–Mar) to $205.
Quiet
Early season (November–early December): resorts open between Nov 6 (Breckenridge) and late November, but terrain may be limited and snowfall is lower (Breckenridge November average 29 inches).
Watch out
Peak dates aren't just pricier — some pass products don't work on them at all. Check your pass's blackout list before you book flights.

No verified month-by-month crowd data — we don't guess. Unknown.
Watch out
Winter waves on north shores (Waimea Bay is calm in summer and pummeled in winter). Hurricane season is June 1–November 30.
